How to Prevent Moths From Eating Your Clothes

A good sweater has a hefty price tag, so it’s important to take care of them. The last thing you want is to reach into your closet and pull out your favorite sweater only to find a big hole in the middle of it. Unfortunately, a closet filled with moths (and their larvae) can make a feast of your cashmere, silk, and fur.

Remove and Inspect
If you suspect that you might have fabric-eating moths in your home, start by removing every single article of clothing from your closet and drawers. Moths don’t like light so you won’t see these little pests sputtering around. Therefore, you must inspect each article of clothing you have in search of them. After you inspect each article of clothing, vacuum your closet and wipe down the walls and doors with white vinegar.

Clean Before Replacing
Before you go ahead and put all of your clothes back in the closet and drawers, wash each article of clothing. Simply shaking out your clothing won’t do the job, especially if these moths have laid eggs in areas like the collar or sleeves. Alternate methods to washing is either bringing everything to the dry cleaners or freeze everything for a few days in your freezer.

Problems With Storage
If your clothing that is stored in the attic is being chewed through, repeat the previous steps. However, instead of placing everything back in its rightful place, store them in plastic containers. For extra protection make sure these containers have locked lids and place a few cotton balls soaked in lavender to ward off any future moths.
