How to Identify FUngus Gnats
Fungus gnats are a common indoor pest, especially if you have house plants. Adult fungus gnats and their larvae thrive in the warm, moist soil of potted plants in your home. Though called fungus gnats, they will eat more than just fungus with a diet that includes algae, decaying plant matter, and plant roots.
Adult fungus gnats look like tiny mosquitoes but do not bite. They don’t cause diseases or property damage, but they are a nuisance in large numbers. You can find their translucent, worm-like larvae in the top two or three inches of soil around the plants. The life of an adult fungus gnat is a short, yet productive ten days. A female typically lays 200 eggs in her lifetime. It does not take long to have a noticeable problem.
