How to Stop Squirrels and Chipmunks From Running Rampant

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to get your spring garden going and having the local wildlife tear up your hard work. Squirrels and chipmunks are two pests that can dig up your plants, eat your veggies, and lower your overall curb appeal. Luckily, there’s are a few things you can do to try and stop them.

• Plenty of Water – Squirrels and chipmunks are always on the prowl for food and water. On hot days, these pests will look for something to hydrate with and if you have tomato plants – expect them to be eaten. To keep your tomato plants from being ruined, place a birdbath in your backyard to double as a watering hole and deterrent.
• Layer of Mulch – These wild rodents LOVE to eat freshly planted bulbs, so it’s important to hide yours as soon as they’re planted. You can do this by placing a new layer of mulch over these bulbs to cover up the freshly dug up soil. Squirrels and chipmunks can easily recognize soil that’s been recently dug up, so it’s your job to disguise it.
• Flower Power – If there’s one thing that squirrels and chipmunks hate, it’s daffodils. Since they hate the smell AND taste of this flower, it makes sense to plant some of these flowers around your garden and by plants you want to protect from wildlife. The aroma of daffodils can easily mask the scent of the other flowers and plants that are in your garden.
• Last Lines of Defense – If you’ve tried everything and you can’t stop the squirrels and chipmunks from eating your garden, opt for chicken wire and netting. This is your best chance at protecting your plants, but it isn’t the final answer as it’s not always guaranteed to work. Sometimes you just need to call in the pros at your local pest control company to take care of your wildlife problems.
