Why New Yorkers Should Worry About Raccoons

New York is one of the best places to live in the United States, but like all wonderful things it does have a few downsides. Unfortunately, New York is home to hundreds of species of pests that can infest or run rampant inside and outside of your home. One pest that you’ll see scurrying across your property is the raccoon — and here’s why you should worry about this furry fella.

City Slickers

Raccoons are known for being found in neighborhoods throughout suburbs, usually located near wooded areas and and water sources. While they are found commonly throughout Long Island, they’re also being found more and more in big cities, like the five boroughs. The urban raccoon population has steadily increased over the last 50 years. They are becoming more advanced than their suburban counterparts as they are 80 percent more likely to access the inside of a trash can.

Warning Signs

The first and most obvious sign of a raccoon problem is the garbage can that’s been toppled over or broken into. You might also find droppings in the surrounding area as they will usually turn the area around your garbage can into their own personal restroom. Keep an eye out for these warning signs because you might not ever see raccoons since they’re nocturnal creatures.

Prevention and Removal

Always make sure the corresponding lid is attached to the garbage can and that it fits snug and securely. Other possible food and water sources like bird feeders and fountains should be removed from the property altogether. Additionally, loose debris scattered throughout the property should be cleaned up to prevent raccoons from having any hiding spots. As for removing raccoons from your property, it’s best to leave this to the professionals. Raccoons can be unpredictable and could possibly be infected with diseases like rabies.
