The Most Annoying Summer Pests

Certain pests thrive throughout the entire year, but there are some that become more of a nuisance during the summer. It’s important for all to know which summertime pests are most active and how to deal with them.

Mosquitos
When most people think of summer pests, the first one that comes to mind is the dreaded mosquito. The itchy bites that last for days are enough to drive any person crazy. To dodge these disease carrying pests, remove any source of standing water from your property. Remove any puddles, birdbaths, buckets, etc., and the population of mosquitoes in your yard should drop significantly.

Ticks
Playing with the dog in the backyard or going for a hike are fun, but can be dangerous as well. In areas with tall grass and vegetation, ticks are common and can latch onto you. Deer ticks are a dangerous species that carry the dreaded Lyme Disease. Avoid ticks by staying away from areas with a lot of leaves, bushes, trees, etc. Many ticks make their way onto a host when that person or animal brushes up against the leaf they are on. If you’re hiking, don’t stray off the beaten path, always cover up, and inspect your body when you arrive home.

Fleas
With warm weather plentiful, you can let the dog outside in the yard for a few hours each day and then whistle for it to come back inside. However, your dog might not be the only thing running into your home — fleas could be making their grand entrance as well! When fleas become a problem with your pet, the first step is to give it a bath with flea control shampoo. Afterwards, vacuum the entire house and make this a regular habit. Consistent vacuuming can reduce the population of fleas within your home drastically.
