How to Properly Store Leftover Food

The day after Thanksgiving is an insect’s favorite holiday. Leftovers are everywhere, people are careless with what they leave out, and now they can feast in peace! But luckily for you, your friends at Knockout Pest Control are going to teach you how to store your leftovers properly to avoid becoming a catering hall for pests…

Cleaning Out the Fridge

Your refrigerator is full and you need to make some room for dessert! Before you go to store your Thanksgiving leftovers in the fridge, empty out the other contents and see what you need and don’t need. That way you can make room for leftovers and get rid of anything that might be old or rotting. Old and rotting is exactly what a pest loves!

Use Storage Containers

When you opened that bag of crackers or chips you put out for your guests, what did you do with that bag after? People typically seal it with a bag clip or tie, and this is good, but not necessarily the most effective. Pests can still get into the plastic bags because these clips do not completely restrict access. Gra yourself a container and put the contents of the bag in there and seal it up. You might actually be able to save room in your pantry this way because these containers are easier to stack!

Don’t Procrastinate Your Dining

Sometimes we put items in the fridge and forget about them with all the holiday festivities going on. You should be consuming leftovers within one week of storing them for optimal taste and for pest safety. The longer you let them sit, the more likely it is for the food to spoil and for messes and spills to occur. Try keeping them in the front of the fridge in an easy to access location so that you see them every time you open the fridge.
