How to Prepare Your Restaurant For a Health Inspection

When the health inspector comes into town, many restaurant owners and managers go into a state of panic. This should never be the case because all restaurants should always be ready to pass a health inspection. In order for your business to always pass, make sure you’re doing these things:

  • Copycat – Before your restaurant is inspected by the actual health inspector, inspect the place yourself using their list. Print out a health inspection form from the Department of Health and go through the list, fixing anything that wouldn’t pass with flying colors. This should really be done on a weekly basis.
  • Train Managers – One person at the top of management shouldn’t be the only person making sure everything is up to code. All managers should be well-versed in knowing the safety guidelines and best practices your restaurant should be following. Conduct trainings as needed to make sure everyone is up to speed.
  • Team Meetings – After going through a self-conducted health inspection, meet with the entire staff. Explain to them what they are doing wrong as well as what they’re doing right. Clearly communicating what you need to see from your staff is critical in them being able to effectively execute their duties.
  • Call Help When Needed – There are certain things that can go wrong at a restaurant, especially in the kitchen. When the refrigerators and freezers aren’t getting as cold as they should be, immediately call an appliance repair company. If there are pests present such as rodents, cockroaches, flies, etc., contact your local pest control company to manage the infestation. Inquire about 12 month plans to ensure any infestations that are no longer present have a zero chance of returning.

A restaurant that doesn’t pass its health inspection will no longer be an open restaurant, so make sure you are always prepared!
