How to Care for Bed Bug Bites

If you’ve recently woken up to a body filled with red, itchy, swollen bumps then you may have a bed bug infestation. Depending on the person, these bits can range from mild to severe in the intensity of their side effects. To care for these bed bug bites, you should do the following:

Proper Diagnosis – Waking up to a small red bump that itches can be caused by a variety of different bugs and other sources. To know if it’s definitely a bed bug infestation, look for these signs:

  • Multiple red bite marks
  • A small red ring around the center of each bite
  • Bite marks spread throughout different areas of the body

Over-the-Counter – Since bed bug bites have the ability to itch and become irritated, don’t scratch them to avoid worsening the condition. Instead, purchase topical creams and painkillers to begin the healing process. Aloe and hydrocortisone can lessen the irritation, ibuprofen can soothe any of the pain, and antihistamines can reduce the swelling.

DIY Remedies – To help soothe specific bites, place apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball. Proceed to hold it against the bite for a few minutes, and repeat for each one that you have. If you’re low on apple cider vinegar, create a paste of baking soda and water, and apply the paste to each bite. For those hard to reach bites, draw yourself a nice hot bath and pour in some Epsom salt.

Caring for your bug bites can help reduce their symptoms and expedite the healing process. However, you will never become bite free until the infestation has been properly managed.
