How to Identify Fruit FLies

Fruit flies are tiny insects (only 1/8 of an inch fully grown). The fruit fly has red eyes with a tan front and a black back. They are most noticeable in the summer and fall months when their food supply of rotting fruit and vegetables are the most common. Fruit flies are a year-round insect; present wherever foods and fruit are allowed to rot and ferment. Fruit flies have a very short life cycle of approximately one week. However, they are prolific reproducers. In a brief couple of days in its adult stage, a single fruit fly can lay over 500 eggs.

When fruit flies enter the confines of a home, restaurant, grocery, supermarket, food processing plant, food distribution warehouse, or wherever food may be overly ripening or decaying, they can quickly cause an enormous infestation problem. Fruit flies lay their eggs on decaying food and within its extremely short life cycle, hundreds of additional fruit flies will emerge.
