Identify Pest: Fungus Gnat Infestation and Problems with Fungus Gnats

Fungus Gnats as are a common indoor pest, especially if you have house plants. Adult Fungus Gnats and their larvae thrive in the warm, moist soil of potted plants in your home. Though called Fungus Gnats, they will eat more than just fungus with a diet that includes algae, decaying plant matter, and plant roots.

What a Fungus Gnat Looks Like

fungus-gnatAdult Fungus Gnats look like tiny Mosquitoes but do not bite. They don’t cause diseases or property damage, but they are a nuisance in large numbers. You can find their translucent, worm-like larvae in the top two or three inches of soil around the plants. The life of an adult Fungus Gnat is a short, yet productive ten days. A female typically lays 200 eggs in her lifetime. It does not take long to have a noticeable problem.

You can reduce your Fungus Gnat problem by letting the soil around your house plants dry out thoroughly between waterings. Repotting plants every so often in a fresh pot is another preventative we recommend. Keep plants trimmed, removing dead leaves and fallen petals immediately. If you have a major infestation, you may need to discard your plants and pots and start over. Alternatively, your Pest Control provider can apply the right insecticides to knock out the problem in the right phases of the Fungus Gnat life cycle.
