How to Mothproof Your Clothes

Posted on December 23rd, 2015 by Knockout Pest Control

The best way to save closet space is to only hang up what you are going to wear for that specific season. Any clothes that you won’t be wearing in the coming months should be stored away. With that being said, you should still take the proper precautions when storing away clothes. Pests like moths and silverfish will have a nice meal in front of them if you don’t!

Keep a Clean Home
Consistently vacuuming, dusting, and keeping a clean home will reduce the amount of pests that are in your home. Any larvae or eggs can be easily disposed of with a vacuuming session before they hatch and pose a bigger threat to your home and precious clothing.

Wash Before Storing
It’s possible for your clothing to have moths, silverfish, larvae, and any eggs hiding in or on them. So before you go ahead and pack up your clothing for the season, head to the laundry room and do a quick wash. This will prevent any pests, alive or unborn, from being trapped in your stored clothing container.

Brush Your Shoulders Off
For the clothing that has been in storage, like winter coats for example, it’s best to give them a good brushing. Take the clothing outside and shake it off a few times, followed by a brushing of the in- and outside of it. This can remove, once again, any eggs that may have been laid. Adding a wash or dry cleaning afterwards will also help remove any unwanted pests.

Tight Seals
The best way to store clothing, especially if it is in the attic, is to put them in vacuum sealed bags. Once they are all sealed up, place them in a plastic container that can also be sealed with a lid. You can never have too much protection when it comes to your fashion!

Protecting your clothing from moths and silverfish can be done in a few simple steps. If your home seems to have more pests than it should then you may have an infestation.
