Why Fall is the Best Time for Garden Pest Control

Are you a proud gardener?

If you want to ensure your garden is set up for success next season, now is the time to focus on keeping pests away.

And we’re here to explain why…

Preventing the Next Generation

Before insects find shelter for the winter season, certain species will lay their eggs in warm places so they can be born and survive in the spring. Some of these pests include species of flies, grasshoppers, crickets, aphids, etc. A common place for eggs to be laid are in the fruits and vegetables within gardens.

You might be thinking to yourself that you don’t have any fruits and vegetables currently growing in the garden, but we’re not talking about fresh ones. Dead fruits and vegetables, also known as “mummies,” are common shelters for pests and their eggs. Therefore, it’s important to clean up gardens by removing any dead and leftover crops before winter arrives.

Next Year’s Problems

When you fail to clean up your garden during the fall season, pests will find shelter and lay their eggs inside of dead crops and underneath the top layer of soil. This can become a problem next spring when you begin to prep your garden.

Eggs will begin to hatch here and a serious infestation can take over your garden before you even have a chance to plant new crops, flowers, etc. The last thing you want is to start the gardening season with an infestation that could harm this year’s plants before they even have a chance to grow.

Fall Cleanup and Removal

Every homeowner should be removing (or mulching) leaves on their property during the fall. This should be done to help prevent lawn disease due to the lack of sunlight and harboring of moisture that a cover of leaves provides.

However, when you remove these leaves, do not place them in a compost pile. Instead, place all of your leaves and twigs deep into the woods on your property or in bags for pickup by your local trash removal service.

Compost piles are an attraction for insects and other pests. Although if you do have one, make sure it is far away from your home. The last thing you want is for pests seeking shelter in your compost pile to make their way into your home.
