Pantry Moths: Removal & Prevention Tips

Heading into your pantry to grab your favorite snack and opening up the box to find small insects has got to be one of the worst feelings ever! Pantry moths can easily infest your home and the food sitting in your kitchen. Don’t allow your food to be wasted because of these hungry pests.

Knowing the Point of Entry
The first and most important thing to do is to find out how these pests got into your home. Just because you have been infested with pantry moths doesn’t mean your home is dirty and filled with cracks. These moths can oftentimes get into your home via unopened boxes that previously housed the moths’ larvae. The factories that produce the affected food are usually to blame for your newfound troubles.

Removing Moths and Food
First things first, throw out any food that currently houses these pantry moths and their larvae. This means you need to go through every box and bag of food in your home, inspect them, and then place the food contents in sealable plastic or glass containers. Doing this will help you decide what to throw away, while also keeping your other food fresher in their new containers. A key indicator of food that’s been infested with pantry moths are small holes in the plastic or cardboard packaging.

Preventing Pantry Infestations
Now that all of your food has been inspected and placed in new airtight containers, wash down your pantry with a water and white vinegar solution. You should also continue to inspect and place your new grocery haul in these airtight containers from this point forward. Keeping an organized and clean pantry will surely reduce your chances of being infested by pantry moths again.
