When the weather warms up, rodents do not pack up and leave. They spread out. House mice and Norway rats move into garages, sheds, garden beds, compost piles, and the gaps behind your siding. Warm weather and abundant food trigger heavy reproduction. A single female house mouse can produce up to 10 litters a year, with five or six pups each. Norway rats are not far behind. A handful of mice in May can easily turn into a colony of 40 or 50 by Labor Day. That is why a quiet summer is often the setup for a brutal fall, when cooler nights push the whole expanded population indoors at once.
Signs You Have a Summer Rodent Problem
Even without the wall-scratching that gives them away in winter, rodents leave clues:
- Pellet droppings in cabinets, garages, basements, or along baseboards
- Greasy rub marks where they squeeze through tight spots
- Chewed packaging, wires, or insulation
- Pet food bowls emptying faster than usual
- A musky ammonia smell in enclosed spaces
Outdoor signs matter too. Burrow holes near foundations, decks, or shrubs in Suffolk County, Westchester, or Rockland County yards usually mean Norway rats have set up shop.
