How Neglect Can Lead to a Pest Infestation in Your Home (and Your Neighbor’s Home)

Unkempt Property

When it comes to your home, the worst thing you can do is neglect it by failing to provide it with necessary maintenance.

The plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems all need annual services and repairs from time to time. Not to mention landscaping, roofing, and all of the other parts of your home that need attention.

How Neglect Can Lead to Pest Infestations

When you aren’t providing your home with the necessary maintenance it needs, pest infestations can begin to develop as a result — sometimes more than one type of pest at a time! This can include an infestation of ants, rodents, cockroaches, bed bugs, termites, or a slew of other pests.

Failing to do these chores and maintenance tasks can increase your risk of developing an infestation in your home:

  • Sweeping floors and vacuuming carpets weekly
  • Actively looking for plumbing leaks and repairing them ASAP
  • Ridding your home of clutter (especially areas like basements and attics)
  • Repairing cracks, holes, and gaps in your home’s exterior
  • Checking your suitcase and clothing after a trip away from home
  • Tending to your lawn by mowing it and remove any overgrown vegetation near the house
  • Keeping excess wood away from your home by at least 20 feet (firewood)

By doing the above chores and maintenance tasks, your home will have a significantly lower chance of developing a pest infestation. However, with each failed chore or task, your chances will increase… by a lot!

How Neglect Can Hurt Your Neighbors

After neglecting your home of the cleanings and maintenance it needs on a regular basis, it will eventually develop a pest infestation. With every day you fail to contact your local pest control company to remedy this issue, the more likely it is that your neighbor will develop a similar infestation.

All it takes is for one pest to explore a little further than it should and it will find itself in your neighbor’s yard — and eventually inside of their home.

This is even more true for those who live in apartments, duplexes, and homes with little to no property between them. The closer homes are to each other, the more likely infestations are to spread elsewhere.

Not caring for your home means you don’t care about your home, but do you know who will care about your home?
