3 Spring Pests to Avoid Getting Bit By

With each passing season, you have to take the good with the bad. Spring brings warm weather, beautiful scenery, and unfortunately — multiple species of pests you need to worry about. Compared to a lot of other seasons, spring and summertime pests have the tendency to bite or sting a lot!

Ticks

Whether you’re hiking through the trails or gardening in your yard, there’s always an opportunity for you to be bit by a tick. Living in the Northeast, deer ticks are common and carry the dreaded Lyme disease that we all try to avoid. If you happen to get bit by a tick, grab a pair of tweezers and pull on the body of this blood sucking pest. Avoid yanking left or right; simply pull straight back until the little guy releases from your skin. If you’re unsure of how long the tick has been feeding on your skin, pay a visit to your doctor.

Bees/Wasps

Seeing that all too familiar black and yellow can instill fear in the bravest of people. While regular bees aren’t hostile (even though they can sting), you should really keep an eye out for wasps and yellow jackets. If you happen to see any of these buzzing bugs, avoid swatting as this can aggravate them. For those unlucky enough to be stung by a wasp or bee and suddenly feel dizzy or a lot of pain, seek medical attention immediately. Antihistamines and ibuprofen can help relieve pain and swelling in the meantime.

Mosquitoes

The most annoying pest of the spring and summer is the one and only — mosquito! To prevent getting bitten by these itchy pests, utilize repellents like citronella candles and make sure there is no standing water anywhere on your property. If you do happen to get a mosquito bite (or several) this season, apply some hydrocortisone cream to relieve the itchiness. However, if you develop flu-like symptoms after being bitten, head to the doctor’s office immediately.
